Astros Second Half Reset
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We hit the All-Star break with the Astros three games back, a loud reminder that the record is ugly but the race is still right there. We lay out what has to change fast: steadier pitching, smarter deadline moves, and a few key bats rising together behind an MVP-level Jordan Alvarez.
• Rangers series recap and why the timing of the break matters
• lack of first-half consistency and how injuries shape the roster
• offense strengths in MLB ranks and why it can still improve
• need for a true starting ace plus a left-handed outfield bat
• rotation outlook with arms returning and who has carried innings
• Jordan Alvarez as the engine and how teams may pitch around him
• Jose Altuve’s second-half importance and the “one more run” plea
• Bryce Matthews and Cam Smith development plus outfield adjustments
• bullpen concerns and why pitching wins in October
• pressure on Dana Brown and Joe Espada tied to deadline decisions
• community message calling for justice for Lorenzo Salgado Arrayo
I'm going to be back here next Monday. We'll have another Astros wrap.
Welcome To The Ice Case
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the ice case. Cold facts like the ice tape. Iceman with the blitz about the open up a cold case. Talk about it with a cold drink. Ice man in the building topic. Let's break them back in the ice creating going home with the ice man. This is the YouTube Ice Drill Iceman. Special edition.
Rangers Series Fallout And Standings
SPEAKER_01We just finished up a weekend series with the Texas Rangers. Our rivals. A team that we don't like too much. We didn't do so well. We lost two out of three. The Astros are now three games back of the Rangers for first place. With a record of 47 and 51.
All Star Break And Consistency Issues
SPEAKER_01So the all-star break comes at a time, I think, when the Astros need a break. And hopefully there's some things that happen in the second half that make this team more competitive. Because we cannot continue to keep winning two games here, one game here, then win maybe two games here, then lose a few more. This team needs more consistency. The first half, we haven't had that at all. We haven't had that 10-game winning streak run, that 11-game winning streak run. We made some progress. Lots of baseball left. They played 98 games. We've had four players that's played in 90 plus of those games. That's uh Christian Walker, Jordan Alvarez, Isaac Perettis, and Cam Smith. Other than that, there's been some injuries. Still hasn't been himself just yet. Jeremy Penny has had a few stints on the IR. We have two young guys in Bryce Matthews and Cam Smith still trying to feel their way through this team. Cam Smith is showing signs of uh getting his hitting back on track. Hitting with a little power, a little pop. But this all-star break is a time to for Dana Brown and Joe Espada to look at this team and and see what we can do to better this team. The August 3rd trade line is approaching.
The Offense Is Doing Its Job
SPEAKER_01Astrol's offense is been, I mean, I can't complain about the offense this year. I mean, if you look at the Astros offense this year, as of today, they are number three in the major leagues in home runs. With 133 home runs. They're number 13 in hits. This is as a Houston Astrills offense. So 13, uh number 13 in hits in the major leagues. They're number 12 in RBIs, number 17 in batting average, which is middle of the pack. And they're number 11 in runs scored. So the offense is there. The good thing is this offense could get better.
Pitching Problems And Trade Deadline Needs
SPEAKER_01It's the pitching. I've talked about it on the last few episodes. I think it's important that we, before the all-star break, add a starting ace pitcher to this team. I've always considered Hunter Brown over the last few years as our ace. But he showed a few cracks in the armor these last few outings. So if we're going to make a serious run, I think the front office Dana Brown and them need to really go out and look for a starting pitcher, along with a left-handed bat, preferably in the outfield. This is what needs to happen if the Astros are going to make one more big run. Like I said, we've been spoiled over the last nine to ten years of a team that's been a dynasty. Won a few World Series. Been in more than a few. Instant playoff team when the season starts. This season in 2026 is a little bit different. Now,
Arms Returning And Rotation Reality
SPEAKER_01granted, there's been a lot of injuries and lots of it has been pitching. But in this second half, the troops are coming back. We got uh Ronel Blanco coming back. McCullers is on his way back. We just got Javiera back. Pitch four in. It's looking pretty decent today. I'm sure he'll build that arm strength and that endurance up, and we'll get some good pitching out of him. Lambert is just Lambert has been Peter Lambert has been our ace. The guy leads the teams in wins with eight wins. Quality starts, leads the teams in strikeouts. So Peter Lambert has really gave us a lot. Aaron Getty, man, he had a hell of a May. He struggled in June. He's struggling here in July. Hopefully this break helps him a little bit, helps these arms rest a little bit, get their heads straight. Like I said, lots of baseball still left.
MVP Alvarez And The Core Bats
SPEAKER_01The offense is overachieved with what they've been dealt in the lineup so far this season. But a big part of it is you have, to my, in my opinion, the MVP of the Major League of Major League Baseball, Jordan Alvarez. He's batting 318. The dude has 31 home runs, 70 RBIs. His home base percentage is like 426. Has over 111 hits. MVP. Guy's a monster. I expect Alvarez to keep building on this as the second half of the season starts. We need Christian Walker to come along, which he's been decent. Needs to get the average up a little bit. He's hitting with some pop in his bat. He has 20 home runs himself, 58 RBIs. Isaac Perettis. He's filled in at third base now that we lost Correa for the year. He's raised his average a lot up to 254. He was down close to 200 at one time, just about a month and a half ago. So we're going to need him to come to the party. Cam Smith has shown signs of coming to the party. Speaking of parties. Hopefully this all-star break helps him too. But my biggest key factor is going to be Jose Altube. He's played in 74 games this season. He's batting 235. Has 11 home runs. It's not the Altube we've seen in the past. Each year he is getting older. But we need one more run from you, Jose. Give us one more run, is all we're asking for. You can do this. Hopefully this week, one week of rest will help him also during this all-star break. I
Youth Movement And Outfield Shuffle
SPEAKER_01like Brass Bryce Matthews out in center. He got banged up a little bit in this series actually on Sunday. Crashed into the wall, so they had to take him out of the game. So it's it's his defense is not the problem. He's awesome out there in the outfield. And we forget he's he's a superb second baseman. He's the heir apparent to Jose Altube. I still think Bryce Matthews will be our future second baseman for many years. But to be on this team, he he's had to switch to the outfield and he's played it amazingly. Same thing with Cam Smith. Cam Smith came over as a third baseman. But to keep him on this roster, he had to adjust to the outfield. So we got two guys who are predominantly infielders, very above average infielders, playing outfield. Actually, after Matthews got hurt in the Rangers game today, they moved Cam Smith to center field. That was interesting because he's been playing an awesome right field this season. But to see him in center made me like, hmm. Could this be a second half move? I still like him in right. He has a very strong arm. But it wouldn't hurt to have his range out there in center field. This is if Bryce Matthews just doesn't get his hitting going because we can't keep a guy batting 197 in the second half on the roster. We've gotten Jeremy Pinha back this weekend. Out of the 98 games, he's played in 51 of the games. So we're going to need more endurance and staying off the injury list. Jeremy, can you do that for us? We're going to need you. I mean, the dude's batting 287. He's he's a key to our he's a key to our offense. He's our leadoff. He's our new leadoff hitter. He's our new Jose Altube. So hopefully this second half, Jeremy Pinha gets it going. I think Christian Vasquez has been doing a great job behind the plate. Diaz has showed signs of since he's back, been behind the plate since his injury, has hit the ball much better than he did before he was injured. Then it's a bunch of young guys on this offense. So I do think the Astros, if they are going to compete, which I think they will, like I said last episode, I have not given up on these Houston Astros. They're only three games out of first place. They had a big opportunity this past week to really, really make some noise. Didn't pan out. But we're still in a very good spot.
Bullpen Wobbles And Playoff Pitching
SPEAKER_01But pitching is going to be the key to this team. Pitching wins you championships. You can dominate with pitching in the playoffs. You don't have to have five excellent starters when you're in a playoff series. Need three good ones. The middle relief got to get better. I was feeling good about the end of our game with our pitching with King and Hayter out there. But these last few games, they got beat up a little bit. Haders feel the first time for the first time today that you can hit against him. Because he has been lights out since he's been back off the injury list. But you're going to have one of those games. It wasn't a save opportunity today. He was in the game to try to protect a tie that we were in. It didn't happen. Time to move on.
Pressure On Dana Brown And Espada
SPEAKER_01Like I said, this is a second half of a season that I think is very important to Dana Brown and Joe Espada. I think this will determine their future with this team. Because of the injuries or because of the talent of the talent have we have lost over the last few years? With losing Tucker and Bregman and guys moving on. Or even just a couple of years ago. But as I look at Tucker and Bregman out there, they're struggling too. On their teams. So it does take a team to win. And I think the Astros have some key components. And when you have a reigning MVP on your team like Alvarez, which I'm saying now, he's going to win the Major League Baseball MVP. He's the best in the biz. He's almost at that Barry Bonds area where when Barry Bonds was all jacked up on them Royds, just blasting home runs left and right. At a certain point, even with guys on base, they were intentionally walking him. I think this second half you're going to see a lot of free passes to Alvarez. Even with runners in scoring position. If there's a base open, they're going to pitch to him, but they're not going to pitch to him. If you know what I mean. So as long as we have Alvarez healthy in the second half. And Walker can be the Walker of a few years ago. And he showed signs that he he's he's got that pop. Needs a he'll he his average needs to come up. Perettis. He's showing signs. Cam Smith is showing signs. Pinja's healthy again. It's gonna take a team. Jose Altubi. Like I can't stress that enough. He is gonna be a key component. If he goes, we go. To me, he is still the leader of this team. I mean, we just need a very hot start in the second half. I mean, hell, we since May 21st, the Astrals have been 26 and 19. And this is with the starting rotation over that same period. Trotting out a 5.29 ERA. Ouch. This trade deadline is August 3rd.
Buyers Not Sellers And A Hot Start
SPEAKER_01We come back on the 17th. It's gonna be key that we get off to a hot start. It'd be nice to run off three, four, five, six wins in a row. That could change us where we're at in the stand-ins. But I'm I'm in I'm interested to see what they do before August 3rd. Because I'm hearing that we're buyers, not sellers. And what that means is the Astros are in to make a run. We're not at that point to where we start dismantling this team, you know, just trading players away, just get prospects. We're not there just yet. This team got one more run in them. And with the right moves, with the young players that we have and the core that we have, we can continue these playoff runs. It's gonna take a team. Pitching is part of it. I think we're gonna find us a starter for this trade deadline. Mark my words. It seems for the last few years we've been looking for that left-handed bat out in the outfield with some pop. I see that happening before the trade deadline. I mean, like I said, it's Dana Brown. He's our general manager. Just determines if you're coming back next season. Fair or not fair? I'm in. Are you in out there? I'm still excited. Three games back. Three games is nothing, guys. Still like 75, 78 games still left. We just gotta make a run. And it is important that we start that run in the second half. More consistent baseball. We need more consistent baseball. So I asked the players. I asked Joe Espada. I asked Dana Brown. I asked that you refocus. Players get your rest. Dana, do your homework. Espada, you could be better. It's your job to make this team better. I still believe in you. I have I haven't jumped ship. But talk to me in about talk to me in about two weeks, people. Talk to me about two weeks. We'll see. I did like what Wade Jr. did uh with the Grand Slam on Saturday. He's interesting. There's some more young players. There's not a lot of help out on the farm, so if the team's going to do better, it's what we have right now. Jake Myers could be coming back up from the minors. He needs a little time down there. We he showed that he can produce at the major league level. So hopefully he gets his head straight. And after the all-star break, you know, he can be a key contributor to this team.
All Star Break Mindset For Fans
SPEAKER_01Let's take a week off, guys. Let's take a week off and enjoy the all-star game, the home run derby. Let's get our mind our minds right as fans. We're Clutch City. We're the H Town. We are the Houston Astros. So get your get your rest in. I'm going to be back here next Monday. We'll have another Astros wrap. Now, before I do get out of here, I I do recite here in the Houston area, as most of you do who listen to the show.
Community Tragedy And Call For Justice
SPEAKER_01So something here in the community happened this past few days where I feel it was a senseless killing of a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Arrayo. May he rest in peace. He was shot and killed a few days ago. We need justice. We need a thorough investigation. This guy has been working here in the US for thirty-five years. He's put two sons through college. One is a teacher. He has another one in high school. He did his job with his sons. The man was going to work that morning with his crew. They were pulled over because of mistaken identity that he looked like somebody they were. He was not the target. He looked like somebody they were looking for. So what ISIS has become, and this is something I do not agree with, racially profiling these people. Chasing them in unmarked cars with mask on. It's scary times. That's about as far as I'll get into it. I am from the Mexican heritage. I am half Mexican and half white. My mother was a proud Latino. And I carry that proud Latino in me too, also. We're better, America. We're better, Houston. Rest in peace, Lorenzo.
