Ice Man reacts to the first real wave of Dallas Cowboys training camp news and explain why the vibe feels sharper with a young coaching staff and a roster that looks bought in. We also break down the players popping on day one, the early injury notes, and the single biggest question that decides whether this team is merely good or truly dangerous.
• Jerry Jones hinting at future trades and a willingness to spend high picks for proven talent
• Early camp flashes from George Pickens and the running back group led by Jaden Blue
• Caleb Downs showing rare versatility across multiple alignments
• Defensive progress points including pass rush urgency and Overshown handling green dot responsibilities
• Injury update on PJ Locke plus why depth pieces matter early
• Key roster battles and role questions including left tackle and the tight end room
• Why “average” defense could still mean a playoff run if the offense stays healthy
On my social media, I'll put my Ice Cave, the pictures of my ice cave, but it's all blue and silver. These podcasts should be out by 5 p.m. on each Thursday.

Cold Open And Football Returns

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to the ice cake. Cold facts like the ice case. Iceman with the bills about to open up a cold case. Talk about it over cold drinks. Iceman in the bills in the top of we can talk about the white. What you can't never out of pocket. And I feel dealing the ice cake. But the ice man send the world to a ice.

SPEAKER_02

The Dallas Ice Cowboys opening training camp session.

SPEAKER_00

One over my shoulder in case I get it.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. You know I get act. Football is back. The Dallas Cowboys are back. It's that fun time of year. Starting next week, every weekend, we're gonna have some football. But like I said, it all starts in training camp.

Cowboys Camp Starts Rolling

SPEAKER_02

This is a special Dallas Cowboys edition of the Ice in the Cave. Cowboys started camp practice yesterday. We'll get to that. Had the opening press conference the day before, where Jerry Jones was up there doing his Jerry Jones. And what I mean by that, giving us a glimpse of hope that maybe a trade will happen. Maybe this is the season we're all in. He's been talking about it. This was the first offseason in a long time that we didn't have a lot of controversy. It was a quiet offseason. Brian Schottenheimer, our coach. I like what he's doing with this team. I like how this team has got Christian Parker as our defensive coordinator.

SPEAKER_01

I like the young coaching staff on this team. I think the players are buying into it too.

SPEAKER_02

This team is practicing as a team, playing as a team. Got some updates. Like I said, we'll talk about the press conference first, and I got some updates from the first day of camp. This will be a short podcast. I just wanted to jump on here and start talking about talking to you once a week about

Jerry Jones Teases Trade Aggression

SPEAKER_02

our Dallas Cowboys. Like I said, Jerry Jones when asked a question the other day about the Crosby trade that almost happened in the offseason from the Raiders. Max Crosby, they asked him after he felt his physical in Baltimore. He was asked why they backed off after that. Because they were really pursuing him at the time, but he wind up going to Baltimore. Well, they gave a better deal at the time. But when asked yesterday, Jerry Jones hinted that we're not through with the Max Crosby trade scenario just yet. Or any trade just yet. He told the media from what he's seeing in this team and the excitement that this could be a season to where he invests some high-round picks to get some proven talent. That's how that's how good he feels about this team. So he's on board. I think we got a great young coaching staff. I like the moves that we made in the offseason.

Early Camp Offense Standouts

SPEAKER_02

Pickens is on board. I heard yesterday in day one, he was ax uh he was explosive. He looked like the Pickens of last year. You had him with C. D. Lamb. I heard Jaden Blue, our rookie running back from last year, and was kind of a lost season. He shined early. Found a lot of open space in practice. And showcased that speed. Keep your eye on another running back, Phil Moffa. He practiced with the second unit yesterday, second unit after Jaden Blue. He ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run. He was a fifth-round pick.

SPEAKER_01

Don't count him out. I think Jaden Blue is gonna be it's gonna be a bounce back season for him.

Caleb Downs Looks Like A Steal

SPEAKER_02

Our prized first-round draft pick, Caleb Downs. From what I heard, he's he's as advertised. He uh lined up in the slot yesterday. He also lined up near the edge and even lined up deep safety. He's very versatile. He's already caught on to the playbook. He knows the plays. He knows where to line up the guys. As a rookie, that was a grab. That was a grab in that draft. A couple other rookies uh in that draft uh I think are to do really well. I think we're gonna get a lot of playing time from some rookies uh that we drafted on the defensive side for this for this upcoming season. Quinnen Williams, who we got as part of the trade package for Micah Parsons last season. And by the way, we slam dunked that trade. The players that we've got in return and the draft picks that we've gotten in return for that trade is rivals the Herschel Walker trade of years ago. He's excited. He wants to be here for the long term. I hear the Cowboys and him are talking of a long-term contract. He says he has a phenomenal staff here, the organization he loves. And then having the guys you can learn lean on, like DeMarcus Sware, the former players. And he says these young players are the team is buying in. That's a testament to shoddy. Keeping this core together. Like where we're I like where we're at with that. That's that's a big key.

Pass Rush Needs And Green Dot Duty

SPEAKER_02

Another standout yeah, yesterday was Donovan Isa Raku. Yeah, I say that a couple of times. He was the rookie edge rusher we had last year that we got from Arizona State. He looked good yesterday off the edge. Show some explosiveness. For this defense to go, we're gonna need him to help put pressure on the quarterback that we we didn't have that last season. Sam Williams needs to step up. The core line in the middle, I feel really good with. With Williams and Clark and clocking up that middle. Overshown looks a lot faster this season. And if we can get Overshown playing some good middle linebacker for us, they put him through some tests with the green dot. And if you don't know what the green dot is, that's the green dot on the helmet. That's the the player they uh they call the calls into from the defensive coordinator. It's his job to help get everybody lined up and get the play called in a timely manner. They even did a little test where the the sound wasn't working, which can happen in games. And let Overshone make the call. And it seems he made he was making the exact calls, even with not getting the radio calls in. It's a big test. That's what you want your green dot doing.

Injury Scare Plus Rookie Defenders

SPEAKER_02

One bit of injury news yesterday, PJ Locke. A little scary moment, a non-contact drill. He limped off with a hyperextended knee. Reports came out today that it's just a hyper extended knee. Needs a little rest. The test came back looking great. So Christian Parker said he should be okay. Like I said, uh Jashaan Barham. He's one of the draft picks we got in this year's draft. While all eyes were fixed on Caleb Downs, this linebacker, Barham, he had a great practice. That's Gordon to head coach Shoddy. I mean, it was helmets only, but you could see his ability to get off blocks and being a heavy-handed guy and versatile on and off the ball. So he's played defensive end and linebacker, so he's very versatile, so that could help us. Another young cornerback, Siobhan Revel Jr. He came off with a knee injury as he was drafted last year. So I consider last year just a getting your legs back under you for this young guy. Because if he was healthy going into the draft last season, they're saying he would have been one of the top cornerbacks in the draft. But coming off a knee injury from college, one full year back, seems to be fully healthy. Christian Parker likes what he's seen from him. So day one practice. He was bumping knees with other players. He wasn't limping. He was running perfectly fine. He was ready to go.

Dak Weapons And Left Tackle Battle

SPEAKER_02

Like I said, George Pickens playing on that franchise tag. Not bad, $27.1 million. That benefits both sides. He's playing for a bigger contract extension. But to do that, he needs to put back-to-back seasons together. If he does that, it benefits the Cowboys, it benefits him, makes this team go. Needs C. D. Lamb to have a backbound, a bounce back year. We know what C. D. Lamb can do. With Dak Prescott staying healthy, seems he's in the best shape. You know, you always hear this. He's in the best shape of his career going into his tenth season. This was a top five offense last season in all categories. So the offense part I'm not worried about. I mean, health could be a problem. I mean, in any FL, in any NFL team. Injuries play a big part to key players. But right now on paper, if healthy, this is going to be another very good offensive year for this team. I see our running back, Javante Williams, having another good season. I like the receivers that we have. I like Ryan Florinoy. He seems to be in shape and a little bigger this year.

SPEAKER_01

Shoddy had good things to say about him. So he can take that number three receiver slot.

SPEAKER_02

You still have Turpin on special teams. You know, Caleb, Caleb Downs can play some special teams too on returning some punts and kicks. I don't know if we'll do that this year with him, but he can. He did it at Ohio State. So Turpin. Still have Jonathan Mingo. So we have some other wide receivers, uh, Denzel Mims. Another key battle will be at the left tackle. Tyler Guyton. We need you to be that number one pick that we got back a few years ago from Oklahoma. That's a key position to protect Dak's blind side. So he's he's in a battle with Nate Thomas for that starting job. But from all what I'm hearing from the Cowboys staff that Tyler Guyton had a really good offseason. It's great to see Nate Thomas is battle battling him. It's good to have depth. I think we have that on our offensive line that BB can stay healthy and be our center. You got Booker.

SPEAKER_01

Got Tyler Smith.

SPEAKER_02

I like what I'm saying on the offensive side of this team. Just need to stay healthy. If this defense is average this season, and I'm just saying average.

SPEAKER_01

We're a playoff team.

SPEAKER_02

It'd be a bonus with Christian Parker to get the best out of this defense because there's been a lot of changes.

Defense Expectations Preseason And Key Vets

SPEAKER_02

You'll see in preseason, which is their first preseason game, is August 15th. I think it's against the Cardinals. You won't see all the starters in these preseason games. They'll get some run. But I think we're going to be pleasantly surprised with this defense this year under Christian Parker. I'm hearing good things from early in camp. It's early in camp. We always cross our fingers that we have no major injuries coming out of camp. Play smart, play strong, learn the system. Jaden Thomas, I'm sorry, Jaden Thompson, we got over in free agency from the Cardinals in the offseason at safety, and we needed help at safety. Shoddy said he looks great. He looks great on film. And when you see the man in person, you can see why. He's been in the league for a few years, but he practices hard. And the young guys see that. That rubs off on your team. When you got guys who are making good money and have been in the league for a while, and they're given all their all at practice, you damn well better be given your all in practice if you're young on this team.

SPEAKER_01

Because that flows over right into the games. So I'm glad to see him back.

SPEAKER_02

I think we signed him to a three-year, $33 million contract in the offseason. So look out for Jalen Thompson in this camp. I'm excited to watch Caleb Downs in some games. I think one more year with C.D. Lamb and Pickens together. That's going to be awesome to watch. I like bringing Roshan Gary over from Green Bay. Like that trade. He's played right alongside with Clark, so they're going to be used to each other. He can get us some uh edge rushing. Plays a good linebacker. And he wants to prove himself because he wants that next next big extension. Defense has really got some good key pieces in there. And don't forget about our secret weapon, Brandon Aubrey, our kicker. He's signed, sealed, and delivered. I'm sure he's gonna kick some bombs for us again this season. I'd like to see a lot more extra points, if you know what I mean. But you get to you get to the 50-yard line, you're in a you're in field goal range with this guy. That's an offensive weapon. So offense is uh is going to be there. We need big steps and big strides from our defense, and if we can do that, I think that's gonna propel this team to be to be talked about not out not only as a playoff contender, but as a Super Bowl contender. And I know people, all Cowboy fans, always talking Super Bowl. But that's what you're supposed to do. Any team, any fan, if you're not talking Super Bowl, why are you watching the game? Why are you playing the game? Dak Prescott

Winning Mindset Tight Ends And Young Coaches

SPEAKER_02

mentioned that the other day at an event. He said, hey, I don't want players on my team if if I feel that they're not in it to win it. I mean, they play for money. That's part of it. But you get paid by producing, but you can't teach heart. And it takes a whole team, especially, especially in the NFL. In this sport, you need a whole team. You need all 53 men on that roster in sync and bleep in the same go.

SPEAKER_01

You need a bounce back season from Jake Ferguson, our tight end.

SPEAKER_02

I was not impressed with the season he had last season, so we need a bounce back season from him. I like a tight end that a young tight end that we have in there is uh Brevin Spam Ford. Luke Schoonmaker, it's a it's a show me season this year for him at tight end also. Princeton Fant is a tight end that we have in camp, and I'm hearing good things about him. So the tight ends will be something to watch this uh during preseason and seeing how these guys are performing. And one of the unsung heroes on this team is our coach, our offensive coordinator, Clayton Adams. Shotty gets all the credit for the play calling. But Clayton Adams is actually the one who brings it together. Young 33, young uh young coach. That was his first time being an NFL offensive coordinator in 2025. This is his second year. He's already drawn attention from other teams that they they want to interview him. So a lot of young coaching guys that are very valuable on this team. Christian Parker, Clayton Adams, even Shoddy. It's a new leaf on this team. Going young. I was tired of seeing these coaches that they've been around everywhere. They've won with these other teams, they've lost with these other teams, they've been fired from these other teams. Last season was a hard watch. This season I'm excited. I really am. It's been a long time. Well, a long time since we won a Super Bowl. But it's been a long time since

Weekly Updates Schedule And Sign Off

SPEAKER_02

I've been this excited about an upcoming season. Like I said, I feel great about the offense. I want to feel great about the defense, and I think we're gonna see some very good things. I mean, it I don't expect that a complete 316, we're the number one defense in the league. That's over, you know, that's you know, just overdreaming right there. But we have talent enough to be top 15. Top 10. That'd be a huge turnaround. But we just need this defense to keep us in in games until the offense gets rolling, and there's gonna be games when this offense is rolling. So as of Thursday, July 30th, when this podcast is coming out, they are on their second day of camp. Sounds like things are going good. I'm gonna during the preseason, I'm gonna come back once a week and have a cowboy camp update. Keep you posted throughout the season. We're gonna have the Cowboys in the Cave. My name is Iceman. On my social media, I'll put my ice cave, the pictures of my ice cave, but it's all blue and silver. Four-screen TVs, all cowboys. I'm just like you, I'm DC for life. I want that Super Bowl. I was blessed enough, I was blessed to be part of watching Cowboys win Super Bowls in the 90s. I was in my early 20s. I would like to celebrate in my latter years here with the Cowboys. Like we all would. So until until I talk to you next Thursday, this has been this has been the Cowboys, the start of camp wrap-up. We'll have a week one update starting next Thursday. These podcasts should be out by 5 p.m. on each day, each Thursday. Let's go, DC, baby. Our Cowboys are back. We're America's team. I believe. All Cowboy fans believe.

SPEAKER_00
